Corporate Intranets Apps

Taking advantage of a wasted opportunity

A talk by Susan Costello
at City University London, College Building,
St John Street, EC1V 4PB

What the talk is about

It's taken 20 years for internet apps to become the sophisticated entities they are today - we expect (and usually get) robust, easy to use, elegant, functional tools from all major corporations offering online access to their products and services.

So why are intranet apps so far behind?

Functions like room booking, expense claiming, travel arranging, stationery ordering, visitor logging, contact finding are usually very poorly designed and unpleasant to use (and they're inaccessible via mobile). Not only can organisations use these essential tools as a way of expressing their brand to their employees but designing them properly saves people time and the company money. This presentation explains how innovation can help.

Finishing touches to BT artbox

Howoco sponsored one of eighty six fibre glass replicas of Sir Gilbert Scotts iconic K6 Telephone Box produced for BT ArtBox. The project celebrates Childline's 25th birthday by bringing art to the streets of London while raising money and awareness for a great cause.

We adorned our box with a lovingly crafted metre tall pigeon, brainchild of Howoco Creative Director Steve Howell. Here she is in all her glory atop our hand painted phonebox:

All Talk up for Nominet Internet Award

All Talk has been short-listed for the Nominet Internet Awards. These annual awards recognise and raise awareness of UK businesses, charities, individuals and public and private sector organisations that are making a difference on, or through, the internet.

The All Talk resource was launched in September 2011 and has become one of the most popular resources available from BTs growing range of free educational resources and is an invaluable addition to the English classroom. It features a wide range of themes and activities and is supported by a culturally rich selection of recordings and transcripts with the emphasis on involving the students in the language thats around them to help them develop their own judgement and analysis.

Howoco are Education Resources Awards Finalists

The Education Resources Awards celebrate the quality and diversity of educational products, resources and educators. All Talk was shortlisted for the Best Secondary Resource or Equipment category.

The All Talk resource supports English GCSE and A level students in the study of Spoken Language and Speaking and Listening. It includes interaction with all forms of digital media and has a 116 page downloadable workbook with accompanying online video clips to support a range of engaging classroom activities. All of the materials, plus extras, are free to download. A printed workbook and DVD was produced and supplied to all state secondary schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The resource is part of BTs growing range of free educational resources, and has been developed in close consultation with people working in teaching, assessment, teacher education and research, and has been piloted in schools, colleges and universities throughout the UK.
